Jack Frost – Richmond

Saw this all over Instagram so we decided to drive down here… All I can say is MEH.

V-STAR Rating:

Variety – 7.5/10 – There are bingsoos, dippin’ dots, macrons, and a few variety of cake slices. I went here because of the dippin dots and bingsoo…………….

Service – 7/10 – It was alright. We just ordered, sat down, and then they brought it to our table and that was the end of that. There was a table of cups and a jug filled with a quarter of ice and no water..

Taste – 6/10 – I thought the dippin dots (banana split) was flavorless? Maybe it had more freezer burn than the actual flavor? I prefer mini melts over dippin dots any day!!! The Mango Bingsoo was garbage. It was so meh and the mangos were so hard. I believe they used green mango for this instead of the yellow peel mango…

Atmosphere – n/a

Reasonably Priced – 7/10 – The price did not match the quality so I would say this was not reasonably priced.

Regardless, it was a garbage experience and I was very disappointed to have come here all the way from Surrey…

Gokudo Shabu Shabu Hot Pot – Richmond

Update: Highly recommend making reservations because it can fill it very fast and they have limited seating to give you the ultimate experience 🙂

I’ve been here before right after getting picked up from the airport only because I heard about it from @yvrnomswidlindu…then I went here again with my friends but with a groupon.

V-STAR Rating:

Variety – 9/10 – WOW!!!! I feel like you get so much with the Groupon or my appetite is just really small… but we still had meats and some vegetables leftover…

Service – 9/10 – Our servers were really nice and friendly and patient. Plus she took more than one photo and automatically offered to take a photo for us without us even asking…. They were quick and tried to be there for us even when it was really busy.

Taste – 9.5/10 – the base that you get with the groupon was okay. My friend and I who sat on the same side got one miso and one tom yum base (paid extra $3). We decided that miso would be too ‘bland’ so we mixed the two together and it ended up being really spicy…….. oops LOL. Everything else was really delicious and I drank 1.5 cups of the milk tea (because it was unlimited). The dessert was also really good (it’s jello and not tofu dessert woooooo!)

Atmosphere – 8/10 – it was dim and if you are a group of 4 or prefer the tables, there are only 2 (i think). Everyone else has to sit up at the oval bar which is really cool/nice i guess. You face the servers inside who help/serve you in and out etc.

Reasonably Priced – 9/10 – for 17.50 each ($45 groupon but discount code bringing it down to $35 which is $17.50 per person plus tax) it is DEFINITELY worth the buck!!!!! Highly recommend you try this place especially with the groupon. Make sure you get the dinner one if you’re going for dinner (because there’s also lunch time).

Overall, I would definitely be coming here again!~

Empire Seafood Restaurant – Richmond

Since we were hanging out in Richmond for the early afternoon, DIM SUM was the appropriate lunch cuisine! I’ve never been here, but I think it is one of my favourite places now….

V-STAR Rating:

Variety – 9/10 – It’s DIM SUM. There’s always a variety of food choices and lunch menu items

Service – 9/10 – Maybe it’s because my friend was speaking in Cantonese, but the service was good?

Taste – 10/10 – Everything was delicious or I was really hungry. The ha (g/c)ao wasn’t soggy like some places. My taste buds were dancing in a good way.

Atmosphere – n/a – However, it started to snow and it was so beautiful to watch it fall while we were on the upper level…

Reasonably Priced – 8/10 – I don’t think it was cheap but it was not expensive either. Just about right for Dim Sum here anyways….

Overall, I would definitely come here again!!

Dinesty – Richmond

I don’t think I ever had pork soup dumplings before… shocker, i know. I was told this place had the best XLB (XIAO LONG BAO – pork soup dumplings in Cantonese(?)).

“V-STAR” Rating:

Variety – 8/10 – There were many pages of food choices – almost too much…. (which makes it hard to choose). But on the other hand, a lot of variety is good in case you are craving one thing or another.

Service – 5/10 – It takes so long just to get a waitress to notice you, to come over and help you, to serve you. Most of them are literally just standing at the counter chitchatting. They seem reluctant when a hand goes up (asking for help). I asked for water with ice and they came back with room temperature water.

Taste – 7/10 – The XLB was good. IT was my first time eating it. There was plenty of juice to explode.

Atmosphere – n/a

Reasonably Priced – 7/10 – Some things are priced right. Others are expensive. I guess this would depend on the value you put on the food there to determine whether or not it is worth the money.

Overall, I probably wouldn’t come to THIS location again and would try the Burnaby one next time.

Mango Mama – Richmond

Mango Mango Mango Mango. If you come here and don’t get a type of mango dessert .. why are you there…

“V-STAR” Rating:

Variety – 7.5/10: A lot of different desserts with mango stuff.. Mango Shaved ice, Mango Mochi, Mango Pancakes, Mango with BIRDS NEST..

Service – 7/10: meh, they kind of just leave you there for a long time and they take the order sheet away. There’s very little interaction – no response kind of thing. When you leave, they don’t seem to appreciate your business.. No greetings like other places do.

Taste – 8/10: Can’t go wrong with mangoes. The mango pancake was a little odd though. Pretty much just mangoes, whip cream, and a very thin layer soft pancake batter.

Atmosphere – 7.5/10: about 10 minutes after we sat down, a lot of people started to come and it was a full house. Had lots of people waiting.. so it got quite loud pretty fast.. its

Reasonably Priced – 5/10: Ridiculously expensive … Desserts are $12+ and there are a few desserts that are $32-$35……………………… Do people actually get a $35 dessert just because there’s birds nest in it…

Would not go here again, only came here cause it’s less popular than Mango Yummy..

Bubble Queen – Richmond

Bubble tea fanatics know this place. It’s usually crowded on weekends and evenings and it is CASH ONLY…

V-STAR Rating:

Variety – 9.5/10: There are so many different flavors and flavors you would never think of drinking with pearls.. From fruity flavors to your favourite chocolates, you name it, they have it..

Service – 7/10: Even when it was empty (just us and another pair), they took quite a long time to make the bubble tea and bubble waffle. If you’re thinking of buying bubble waffles, expect over 10 minutes for some “good quality” bubble waffles…

Taste – 8.5/10: I don’t think I’ve ever had bad bubble tea here. As for the bubble waffles, they can be a hit or miss. I usually get original bubble waffles which all taste the same at most places.. This time I decided to get the MANGO MOCHI bubble waffle (see image above). It was an interesting taste because I would have never imagined eating hot mango… It wasn’t bad, but it makes you thirsty really fast.

Atmosphere – N/A: It’s a really small place. Originally there were no seats and it was just a take out place. I guess due to high demands, they added a few bar stools by the windows and the bubble waffle machines. There’s not much to say about this ambiance/atmosphere so I won’t give it a rating.

Reasonably Priced – 7/10 : The mango mochi bubble waffle cost me a bit over $5, but usually an original costs $3.50-$4.00 so I guess I’m paying a dollar or so extra for the mango.. Bubble tea can go from $3.50 (basic) to $6.80 (specials) … You can be the judge..

SURA – Richmond

In the heart of Aberdeen Mall, this Korean “Royal Cuisine” Restaurant is located on the lowest floor by H-MART.

V-STAR Rating:

Variety  – 9/10: There is a lot to choose from including set menus! Or you can order separate dishes that you like.. but we were lazy + a coworker recommended that we do the $20 per person lunch special.. So many dishes came out all at once !

Service – 9/10: At first they were slow to seat us. The one who made eye contact with me didn’t really acknowledge us until we stood “in line” longer than necessary so he called one of his colleagues to help us out. (He was taking payment from a customer so I guess he couldn’t help us). On the other hand, service for food/ordering was super fast. All the dishes came out really quick.. Our table went from 0-100 real quick….

Taste – 8.5/10: I liked a lot of dishes, but there were a few traditional Korean side dishes that I didn’t really like or try because I just knew.. (from trying at other places). There’s a hint of spice to 80% of the dishes so if you cannot handle spice AT ALL, I would ask them to decrease the spicy level.

Atmosphere – 8/10: the interior and seating arrangement was really cute. The table was spacious. The staff was really friendly and fast and attentive even if you didn’t mean to call them over…

Reasonably Priced – 8/10: I went during lunch where the “lunch special” was available so to me, the 15$ or 20$ per person deal is definitely worth your money. You get your bang for the buck for sure!!! We even had leftovers and the boyfriend was stuffed… (I actually thought we could finish it because he eats a lot).

I would highly recommend this place during lunch time. I’m not too sure how it is during dinner time… The only thing that kind of sucks is the parking at Aberdeen… 😕
